I’ve been surprisingly busy in November and haven’t had much time to Christmas to the max like I normally do every year. There’s still a whole month to go, so I might be adding bits and pieces of holiday cheer when I get a spare second here and there.
But I did manage to whip up some super fast and simple DIY porch light decor. Here’s how I did it!
Materials
-wire clothes hangers
-floral wire
-tape
-floral foam
-festive tree branches/greenery
-ribbon
1. Bend clothes hangers
Bend the corners of the the clothes hangers down and towards each other as much as they will bend. The hangers have to be no wider than the width of the floral foam.
2. Cut and prep floral wire
Cut enough floral wire to wrap around the floral foam the short way with enough extra to twist the ends together.
Wrap the wire in tape very loosely. I used packaging tape, but most types of tape would work for this. You do not have to be neat or precise. In fact, it’s better if you aren’t. The tape is to act as a barrier between the wire and the foam so the wire doesn’t just slice through the foam.
You could probably use some old newspaper or bubble wrap instead of tape, as well.
3. Attach clothes hanger to foam
Thread the wire in between the loops of the hanger. Twist the ends of the wire together to secure it in place. I used two pieces of floral wire, one sort of midway up the foam and one near the bottom.
For a little extra security, I also added a piece of packaging tape along the back of the foam. It won’t stick to the foam itself, but it should stick firmly to the two pieces of wire. Then, wrapped it over the top of the foam and around the hook part of the hanger.
Then, wrap it under the bottom of the foam and around the bottom wire on the front. This extra tape helps to keep the hanger from sliding around too much once it’s hanging.
4. Cut up some festive greenery
Cut up the greenery you want to use in your display. Try not to put too many big pieces on the foam because the hanger may separate from the foam if it gets too heavy.
5. Attach greenery to foam
Starting at the bottom of the foam, insert your greenery securely. It’s best to use the longest pieces at the bottom and make them shorter as you go up. One single branch/piece of greenery won’t cover the foam and hanger by itself, so you have to layer the pieces.
6. Add bow
This is optional, but I found that adding a bow or some kind of decor at the top helps to hide the foam and hanger better than more greenery. It also helps to add more holiday vibes!
And voila! A super easy way to add some holiday cheer to your front porch.
